The Dambusters
Nineteen Lancaster's of 617 Squadron flew from RAF Scampton, near Lincoln on the night of May 16th 1943. Their mission was to destroy three dams in the Ruhr Valley, the Eder, the Mohne and the Sorpe, with the innovative ‘bouncing bomb’. At the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre in East Kirkby, you can see ‘Just Jane’, an original Lancaster bomber, and you may be lucky enough to see it taxi down the runway! Today, RAF Scampton is the home of the world-famous ‘Red Arrows’.
