Our dear Thomas Shelby from Peaky Blinders, Cillian Murphy, is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. In every project he has been in, Murphy has proven time and time again that he is doing great with his dedication and love for the job. Appearing in films since 1992, the Irish actor has made progress in the horror film 28 Days Later (2002). It is a challenge to classify Cillian Murphy’s performance when each of them is excellent, without exception. However, we tried to classify the actor’s performance based on the memorability of the characters and the impact on the viewer.
1. Peaky Blinders
Of course, the most memorable character Murphy played is Tommy Shelby from Peaky Blinders. We are aware that this is biased, as it played the role for 6 seasons. It’s the longest time I’ve seen Murphy play the same character; however, this is not the only reason I chose his role in Peaky Blinders as his best performance. His character, who fights internal and external demons, leaves room for Murphy to show off his acting skills. Murphy plays Shelby in such a charismatic way that it’s hard not to be convinced that this is a performance for life.

2. 28 days later
As mentioned above, Murphy’s character from 28 days later was a breakthrough for him as he became known internationally. In the film, directed by Danny Boyle, he portrays a man named Jim who wakes up from a coma at a hospital in London and discovers that he is alone in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by zombies. Murphy proves that he can play both the victim and the predator in the movie.
3. Breakfast on Pluto
The controversial Cillian Murphy movies aren’t that many, but Breakfast on Pluto is one of them. Murphy plays a transgender woman in the film as she struggles with her past and identity. Although these issues were not addressed at the time of the film’s release (2005), a few years later, the choice of a cis-gender man for the role of a transgender woman was considered wrong. However, this does not mean that the actor did not play the perfect role; he did. His role even earned him his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor.
Another Cillian Murphy show, his role in Dunkirk was the shortest, but most impactful. The character he played doesn’t even have a name. He is described as a “trembling soldier” and is seen as a soldier with PTSD who is rescued by British civilians. Murphy perfectly captures the horrors of war and how they can affect a terrified and frightened soldier.
5. The beginning
In this incredible film by Christopher Nolan, Leonardo DiCaprio plays the role of a thief who can infiltrate people’s dreams and plant ideas in their subconscious. In order to have a chance to clear his file, the thief must put an idea in the subconscious of Murphy’s character. Murphy’s acting is well suited to other cast members, including big names such as Dicaprio, Tom Hardy, Elliot Page and Joseph Gordon Levitt. He does not take anyone out of the spotlight, but rather complements their performance.
6. A quiet place 2
In A Quiet Place 2, Murphy plays a guy named Emmett, a family friend of the Abbott family. While Emily Blunt’s character is trying to cope with the loss of her husband, Emmett is also saddened by the loss of her own family. As the abbots stumble upon him, they plead with him for help. Murphy, once again, plays perfectly a man who is sad but at the same time is calculated and careful.

7. Batman Begins
I told you originally that all of Cillian Murphy’s shows were great, and we still stick to that. In the Dark Knight trilogy, we see Murphy play a villain named Scarecrow, a former psychology professor, Dr. Jonathan Crane. It was incredible to see how Murphy could become sinister in seconds with his angelic blue eyes. It was a joy to watch him in this movie.

Good news: Murphy will star in another Nolan movie called Oppenheimer, which is expected to be released in July 2023. Murphy will play the title character, J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is among the parents of the atomic bomb. Given Murphy’s contributions to Nolan’s previous films, fans and critics alike are confident that Murphy will succeed.
