Diablo Immortal flies on the powerful Galaxy S22 Ultra

Diablo Immortal is the latest in a venerable and much-loved franchise from Blizzard Entertainment and the first to be made for mobile platforms. It offers fast hack-and-slash action, with a wide variety of customizable character classes to play and an interesting story set in a dark fantasy universe.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is the most powerful mobile smartphone gaming hardware available today, so how do you handle the latest and probably the best reputable game? I found out.

The first thing to note Immortal Devil is that it is a large download and takes up a lot of space. Once you’ve installed all the updates, the game will swallow up about 10GB of storage on your phone. you opted for the basic 128 GB model, those 10 GB will burn you. Also, if you have a slow DSL connection like me, be prepared to wait half a day for the game to be fully installed. It is possible to play with only 2.4 GB downloaded, but this is a much more limited experience.

I tested Immortal Devil on the 512 GB version of the S22 Ultra, which means I have 12 GB of RAM to work with. If you have the 128 GB model of the S22 Ultra, you will only have 8 GB of RAM, so the versions with higher storage capacity of the phone offer a real advantage for games beyond the storage capacity of the games. However, although we couldn’t test the 128 GB model, it should offer a very similar experience to the 512 GB model, as Diablo Immortal only requires a minimum of 2 GB of RAM.

The S22 Ultra comes equipped with an Exynos 2200 and Xclipse 920 processor if you live in Europe, or a Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor and an Adreno 730 GPU in the rest of the world. The screen is a 6.8-inch dynamic AMOLED panel that supports 120 Hz, HDR10 + and 1750 nits at maximum brightness. All of this is a recipe for a great mobile gaming experience, and I’ve found that these impressive specs have translated into real-world gaming performance in Immortal Devil.

During the game at maximum settings, the battery level dropped at a rate of about 22.5% per hour. This offers a total of about four hours of play out of a 100% charge. Playing in low light and implementing battery saving options can greatly increase battery life. While playing for an hour or two at a time, with maximum settings and screen brightness, the phone certainly warms up, but not dangerously or unpleasantly, even in a protective case.

The game is limited to 60 fps, so it can’t take full advantage of the S22 Ultra’s 120 Hz refresh rate, but the game’s maximum 60 fps refresh rate still looks great. Also, the game cannot be set to the maximum resolution on the S22 Ultra. However, all other graphics settings can be conveniently maximized without fear of frame rate declines. The touch screen is also very responsive and there are no delay or control issues.

For the best gaming experience, I recommend setting your phone to brightness and turning off battery saving. I would also suggest using Samsung’s Game Booster app to launch the game in priority mode, which blocks notifications and closes other apps, so more processing power and network bandwidth are dedicated to running the game. In addition, you may want to access the Game Booster Labs settings menu and enable Alternative Game Performance Management, which can improve your game performance. Samsung warns that this may cause overheating, but I did not notice a temperature difference with it on.

I also tried to play with the built-in S-Pen, which is equipped with S22 Ultra. Unfortunately, the directional keyboard that is used to move your character is inoperable while using the S-Pen, so it’s not good during combat. However, it’s perfect for navigating menus, changing character skills and equipment, and chatting with other players.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra might be the best way to experience Diablo Immortal on a smartphone. The phone has more than enough power to handle the game at full settings and does not suffer from extreme overheating or blatant battery consumption. It’s a little disappointing that the game can’t be increased to 120 fps, but this is a limitation of the game, rather than the phone. The ability to use the S-Pen to control certain complicated aspects of the game is a major advantage.

As a skeptic about mobile gaming in general, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed playing Immortal Devil on the S22 Ultra. The game is not without its flaws, mostly focused on its irritating free-to-play economy, but it is still addictive and fun to play.

If you have a Galaxy S22 Ultra, take the game from Google Play and try it out, but keep in mind that the game is cross-platform, so you can play and enjoy it on other devices as well.
