How to split your screen in Windows 10

Windows has always been a great multitasking environment, with the ability to run multiple applications simultaneously and switch between them with relative ease.

In Windows 10, Microsoft tightened the lock mechanism and expanded its functionality. Today, the latest version of Windows 10 offers a number of ways to split your screen into multiple windows and really work, with better support for higher-resolution displays and multiple monitors. Even Windows 11 does the same thing, but with added features that get productivity, like Snap Layouts.

Split screen in Windows 10 versus Windows 11

Before we get started, let’s talk about split-screen multitasking in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Both operating systems will allow you to use what’s known as Snap Assist.

As we’ll explain later, Snap Assist is a Windows feature that suggests ways to group your open applications when using a specific keyboard shortcut.

Anything you do with Snap Assist will not be “saved”. If you leave an application, you’ll need to manually trigger that split screen again. The same is true if you choose to open another application or minimize the taskbar.

However, in Windows 11, Microsoft has improved this. It has expanded to Snap Assist with a new feature known as Snap Layouts. You can still use Snap Assist keyboard shortcuts in Windows 11, but compared to Windows 10, Snap Layouts in Windows 11 gives you extensive ways to use the split screen.

It has ways to group and save open apps, so if you minimize apps to the taskbar, Windows will remember them as a Snap group and you won’t lose your place. There’s also a visual hint (with up to six modes) on how you can split the screen through Snap Layouts with a pop-up window when you hover over the maximize button - which you don’t get in Windows 10.

Leaving all this aside, let’s dive deeper.

Using Snap Assist in Windows 10

One of the most important contributions of Windows 10 to split-screen multitasking is Snap Assist, which makes it easy to select an open application window when choosing which applications to arrange on the screen. Here’s how to use it:

Step 1: Choose the window you want to pin to the middle of the screen, then drag it to the edge.

Step 2: If you have other windows or applications open when you click on the selected window, you will also see a number of options that can fill the second half. Click on one and it will automatically lock in position opposite the first window. If you do not do so and the selection grid disappears, drag the second window to the edge of the empty space.

Step 3: To resize the two windows, hover over the dividing line until it becomes two arrows. Click and hold the tab to adjust the two windows accordingly. However, there is a limit to how narrow a window can be.

Note: Does Snap Assist refuse to work or behave strangely? Check for startup programs, applications that launch automatically when you sign in to Windows. Sometimes they can interfere with Snap Assist, and disabling them will fix the problem. Our guide to managing startup programs is a great place to start.

Use the keyboard shortcut in Windows 10 and 11

Want a faster way to do this on your keyboard? There is a shortcut to split windows that is really useful. In an active window, press and hold Windows key and then press either Left or Right arrow key. This should automatically lock the active window to the left or right. Select another window to fill the second empty space.

If you want to enlarge a window to full screen, just tap Windows the key and Up Arrow keys together. If you accidentally make a quarter of a window instead of half a window, you can use Windows and Up or Down Arrow keys to expand it as well.

If you have a large or high-resolution display, you can take advantage of all that extra screen real estate by opening up to four windows on a single screen using Corner Snap.

Step 1: Drag and drop the first window into any corner. To use the keyboard shortcut, press and hold Windows key followed by Left or Right Arrow key to lock the active window to the left or right. Then press and hold the button Windows key followed by Up or Down Arrow the key to move the fixed window to the top or bottom corner.

Step 2: With the first active window in one corner, drag and drop the second window into any other available corner. You do not have to choose a specific corner.

Step 3: Repeat step 2 to complete the other two corners as needed. Note that a 2020 update to Windows 10 updated this four-window design and made all broken windows act as a single window. This may not sound important, but it’s very useful when you need to do something else, such as open an app or an extra file while working with your broken windows - now they’ll stay together, waiting for you to come back.

Snap Assist is easy to disable if it gets annoying. Here’s how:

Step 2: Select System

Step 3: Select Multifunction listed on the left

Step 4: Click on commutation displayed below Snap Windows to disable this feature. If you’d rather turn off certain Snap Assist features than turn them off completely, there are three settings you can turn off. Just skip Step 4 and uncheck the boxes next to each setting as needed:

How to split your screen in Windows 11

Snap Layouts in Windows 11 are a new feature that helps increase productivity and split the screen in the new Microsoft operating system. It’s a lot like Snap Assist in Windows 10, but it offers up to six different ways to like a window. Snap Layouts are tailored to the current screen size and orientation, including support for three side-by-side windows on large landscape screens, and top / bottom windows stacked on portrait screens.

Step 1: strikes Windows and Z key on the keyboard and you will see a box that appears at the top right of the open window. You can also hover your mouse over the maximize button to see the different ways to use the split screen.

Step 2: Choose one of the ways to split the window screen. There will be a total of six to choose from. Windows will open the task switch and suggest another open window to choose from. Once you choose an open window, it will lock.

Customize grids with a third-party application in Windows 10

We’ll be the first to point out that the native Windows 10 option is impressive; however, there are a variety of third-party applications that give you a little more. With these apps, you can enjoy more definitive, grid-like changes to your windows, so you can get all the tools you love so much (the perfect size) and place them wherever you want. Our recommendation is AquaSnap.

AquaSnap allows users to develop and change as many separate windows as needed, with a neat snap feature that works similarly to Windows 10. However, it’s a little more flexible and consists of a few interesting, additional tools, such as be arranging small windows together and other sweets. tricks.

You can download and start using your personal version of AquaSnap for free. With it, you will have access to basic functions such as docking, snapping, stretching, various keyboard shortcuts and much more. If you are ready to intensify it, you can opt for the Professional edition, which comes in two different versions: Standard and Site. You can pay $ 18 for the Standard version and $ 600 for the Site version. These special editions allow you to obtain licenses, add convenient mouse shortcuts, multi-monitor support, and enjoy three other premium features.
