Relaxing games on Switch and mobile

The village of the East

It’s time to take a trip to Sunrise Village, where the stress of everyday life will melt away and you will be lost in a peaceful world where your only worries are to expand your farm and gather supplies to meet your needs. Orders. The simple assembly, build and expansion routine is one that will be familiar to fans of games such as Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing.

What makes this game even more relaxing is that it is free-to-play. You don’t even have to worry about justifying your costs, you just have to download the game and then go to the farm for a few good moments. It could easily become a daily stress relief ritual.

Play Sunrise Village iPhone free.

A short trip - Switch

A short trip is a little magical experience. As the name suggests, it’s just over an hour to explore a beautiful island, meet friends and try to get to the top of the mountain. The crisp pixels of the art style, the off-the-cuff dialogue and the general vibration of the game create a perfect experience. It’s one of my favorite games on the Switch.

Stardew Valley - Switch and mobile

Stardew Valley perfected the agriculture simulator, then extended it in all directions. The main objective of the game is to build a small patch of farmland in a remote city. But as time goes on, you meet a variety of people who live there, explore dangerous underground caverns, and also fish a little (see our Stardew Vallew fish guide for information).

It’s cold to the max and captivating enough to waste you tens of hours. If you’re tired of Stardew, check out our Witchbrook release guide to get ready for your next developer game.

Untitled Goose Game - Switch

The goose is free and ready to be obtuse. Untitled Goose Game took the world by storm with its open piano, in the style of Debussy, and the hilarious premise, presenting an ugly goose ready to prank several people in a small town. Interestingly, the developer built the city using Google maps because they had never visited the UK. The result is a strange brick mosaic and lakes, pubs and telephone boxes, all baked to be pranked.

Animal Crossing - Switch and mobile

Animal Crossing is the pinnacle of chill. It’s all about sitting down, doing chores and enjoying the breeze. Switch version, Animal Crossing: New Horizons offers a robust island building experience, full of furniture and clothes to create, characters to befriend and many, many ways to customize your paradise in the ocean. On mobile, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, get a condensed version of building a campsite. They’re both about spending time, and that’s damn chill.

A snowboarder climbs over a precipice, the moon behind them, their scarf leaning far to the right, in the relaxing game Alto's Adventure.

Alto’s adventure - mobile

Speaking of chill, there is nothing more chill than snowboarding on a frozen mountain. That’s what Alto’s Adventure is all about, with a set of challenges to complete as you repeat procedurally generated rounds. The mountain transforms from a desolate, cold and crowded forest to small sets of buildings and large jumps over precipices. We think it’s great, as you can see in Alto’s Adventure: The Spirit of the Mountain review.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - Switch

Toad may have one of the most irritating voices in all of the games, but the magic puzzle boxes he explores are charming enough to make you forget about it. All the standalone puzzles are full of mechanisms, pulleys and little stupid challenges, all wrapped in a gorgeous art style, toy. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker may have originated on the Wii U, but its lightweight gameplay is just as addictive today.

Unpacking - Switch

Moving isn’t fun at all, is it? But just as Animal Crossing turns everyday fun into video games, Unpacking makes moving feel like a messy, zen vacation. However, it is not just about unpacking the boxes, but also about unfolding a story that barely exists, weaving pieces of one’s life with literal, physical pieces of one’s life. It is an experience that goes far beyond the sum of its parts.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Switch

Once on a wide, windy plain in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Zelda’s main theme broke through the silence of nature and rose subtly; he made the hairs on my arms sit on my head. BotW’s magic is this silence. Ability to stop, explore, create and experiment without the game entering. Not even music tells you what should happen. The whole game revolves around any experience you want from it. It’s my favorite game of all time.

The story of the gulf - Switch

The gulf is the worst. Or at least every person I know who likes golf isn’t my girlfriend. Because everyone I’ve met who likes Golf Story is the coolest person in the world. It’s a game of golf, believe it or not, with dialogue like an episode of Seinfeld and lots of weird characters to meet and spend. It’s hilarious, fun and, most importantly, relaxing. For more relaxing time on the course, check out our golf games guide.

These are all the relaxing games we have so far. There are many more, but this is a good place to start. Check out our recommendations for mysterious games for more of a head scratcher.
